The Gautrain of Johannesburg's O.R Tambo International Airport

Gautrain is an 80km long rail line which opened in June 2010 just in time for the World Cup. Gautrain links Johannesburg's O.R Tambo International Airport with the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria and other sorrounding areas such as Hatfield, Sandton, Rosebank, Park, Centurion, Midrand, Rhodesfield among others. Gautrain is Africa's first and only dedicated Airport - City Centre rail link.

The service recorded over a million passengers within 100 days of its opening.
Gautrain was designed to decongest the highways leading to the airport by encouraging passengers to leave their vehicles behind in favour of the clean and comfortable train ride. Parking lots are available at most Gautrain Stations to encourage use of the train by passengers.

Trains run every 20 minutes during offpeak periods and every 12 minutes during peak (heavy travel) periods.

The Gautrain network is supplemented by a fleet of Gautrain buses which bring passengers to and from areas within a 15km radius from the Gautrain stations. The Gautrain is designed to travel at up to 160km/h which results in significantly reduced travel times to and from the O.R Tambo International Airport compared to car travel on the frequently congested highway. In other words, traveling to O.R Tambo International Airport on the Gautrain is a sure way to beat the traffic congestion on the highway!

Ubiquitous Security on and off the trains

Gautrain has ushered in tremendous economic benefits to the areas along its route network, for example, several new shopping malls, residential projects and office complexes have been constructed in areas close to Gautrain's route as a direct result of the rail service. Property prices as well as demand in these areas have accordingly increased dramatically.

in future there are plans to extend the Gautrain to other areas.
